Discipleship
by Don Goldstein

Introduction

This course was written by a Messianic Jew (A Jew who believes that Yeshua {Jesus} is the Messiah {the Christ}.) There are many discipleship books that are written by Christians, in Christian terms, but very few are written in Messianic terms.

Although there is disagreement among Jewish people regarding the writing out of G-d’s name in any form, for the sake of the Jews who would be disturbed by seeing it, I have decided to always spell out G-d in this way.

Likewise, the word “saved” disturbs some new Jewish believers. Therefore, I will instead use the translation of the Hebrew word “kapar” which means covered over. This word is expressed in Jewish terms as “atoned”. This is why the high holy feast day “Yom Kippur” is known as the day of atonement, for it is the day that non-Messianic Jews believe that their sins are covered over. So from now on, I will substitute the word “saved” with “atoned”.

For the benefit of those readers who are new believers, I will be including the actual Scripture reference immediately following any talk about what the Bible says. You may be wondering as you go along why I am taking the time and space to put so many Scriptures in here. I want you to know and understand that G-d’s Word is full of real life, real people who have faced similar issues to those we face today. Instead of trying to figure out what to do and how to respond, read and learn the Bible. Then your life will be better, more ordered, and in accordance with G-d’s will.

There are many translations of the Bible. Throughout this study, in most cases, but not all, I will use the NLT which stands for the New Living Translation. This is a very easy to read modern translation. It will give you the idea or concept of what the writer was saying in loose modern terms. However, to truly study in depth, you will need to learn to use the more closely translated versions such as the NAS, New American Standard, the NKJ, the New King James, the KJV, or the King James Version. Other popular translations include the NIV, New International Version and the Complete Jewish Bible by Dr. David Sterns. You should get a study Bible as this will help you enormously. This course is designed to simply get you started on the path to a loving relationship with our Creator, the G-d of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It will not teach you all you will ever need to learn, but it will attempt to lay a solid foundation for further Biblical and Spiritual growth.
